17 July - Chinese Acrobats.

Sunday 17 July we packed up the kids and headed down the College of Micronesia to watch the touring Chinese Acrobats. What unfolded could only happen in Pohnpei......

The show was due to start at 6:30pm. At approximately 6:25pm the mother of all storms came through uprooting trees and damaging buildings. This resulted in the power being lost inside the stadium.

Lucky we packed the DVD player. It kept Jaxon, Indy and about a dozen local kids entertained for a while.

At about 7:10pm something happened that is difficult to explain. The chinese artists started performing one by one under the light of mobile phones. Very funny, but inventive all the same. The show must go one.....

Mandolin playing and dancing in the dark....

They even had a sax player. Very cool.

Now this is what we came to see. These guys were great. Even if it was under torch light.

As luck would have it we packed up the kids at 8pm to go home, got the end of our aisle and the power came back on. Back to our seats to see what would happen next. Well we had waited this long....

An English explanation followed by a Pohnpean version preceded each act.

This was also very cool. The dancer in the middle kept changing her mask, keeping us all wondering how.

Nothing like standing on your head and spinning hula hoops to keep the crowed entertained.

I kid you not, there was at least twenty hoops in this bit.

The end at last. The FSM President, The Foreign Secretary and the Chinese Ambassador had all waited in the dark as well. It turned out to be a good night after all. Very entertaining.
