Nahlap 01

Nahlap is a 'Resort Island' just off the coast of mainland Pohnpei. We had heard a lot about it and were keen to check it out for ourselves. So Scott took a day's leave and off we went. Up at 0630 for a 0800 departure from home for a 40 minute drive to meet the boat at 0900.

Waiting at the boat dock. At this stage we weren't that confident that the boat would even turn up to take us.

Luckily for us the boat turned up as arranged and we were off for a 20 minute ride across to Nahlap

A confidence builder for sure.

Dodgy landing but that just added to the magnificent character of the place.

Made it safe and sound. 'Resort' may have been a bit of a twist of words.

Nahlap 02

Well Micronesia is pretty much a third world country so a lot of the things to do involve using your imagination and making the best of what is on offer.

Accomodation is basic. No water, no air-conditioning, no bed. But it's on the water. Location, location, location.

Always wanted to be Tarzan for a day.

We finally found a patch of clean sand amongst the mangroves to build some sandcastles.

Narlap 03

We finally got Jaxon and Indi to seat quietly for a photo.

Kicking back and enjoying the view.

We managed to take it in turns looking after the kids to have a short snorkel. Just like all of the snorkeling over here - fantastic.

Apparently you can come all the way over to Nahlap to get hitched.

Another day in paradise.

Narlap 04

Nahlap Crabs. Well we couldn't find any birdlife for Peter and Chris (Nic's Mum and Dad) so we focussed on crabs that we saw instead. We got a little creative with the names....The massive red clawed black crab.

The 'dingos got my baby' sized land crab.

Hermans Hermit Crab

The 'What you looken at Willis' crab

The 'I'd better run before Indi stomps on me' crab.

Good Karma

Whether you believe in Karma or not is obviously up to you. But one good turn deserves another for sure. It was Easter Monday and we were out on the boat for the day. I heard my mobile phone ring (which a small miracle on the boat in itself) and a friend needed a favour. A fishing boat had some rope caught around the bow-thruster and couldn't remove it. As it was the Easter holiday both dive shops on island were shut so they asked me if they could borrow my dive gear to help them cut the line free. 'No worries, just fill the tank when you are done'. The next day my tank was returned full with a couple of thank-yous and I thought that was the end of it. I was happy to help them out; I wasn't using the diving gear anyway. About two weeks after that I got a phone call from the same guy asking me if I was home. We were and he turned up with a couple of frozen Albacore Tuna about 20kgs each. The guys on the fishing boat wanted to return the favour. Good Karma for sure.

A couple of solid Albacore, close relations to the yellow-fin tuna and just as tasty.
They were big fish so we are just sawing off slabs of tuna meat as we want it.

Sawing a frozen tuna isn't as easy as I thought.

For no real reason at all I have put this picture of our dinner last night. About 2kgs of rainbow runner baked in the oven. What wasn't eaten is about to be turned into fishcakes. Yummo.

Eel Fishing

Some valueable Father and Son time was needed (read Nic needed a break from Jaxon while Indi had an afternoon sleep). So Scott, Jaxon and Dean (our neighbour) headed off to a local stream for a spot of fishing. It was a little bit of a hike in with Jaxon and all the gear being carried through the bush. It opened up at the stream and was quite a nice little spot.

A little bit of bread on a small hook produced an eel in no time at all. There was a lot of little fish but they were smart enough to not eat the bread on the hook.
This was as far as the first one got as the line snapped as we tried to lift it out of the water.

The second one on dry land. 'Not Happy Jan'.

Dean with the monster from the deep, our biggest catch of the day. We let them all swim off, much the disgust of the crowd of local kids that had gradually gathered to watch. I'm sure they had visions of eel stew or something similiar. All over in a couple of hours but it was a good bit of time-filling fun.

Fishing - Post Mother's Day

Now that Mother's Day is over for another year it was time to get back on the water. Scott went out with a couple of mates for a spot of fishing, as you do....

Back to the Compound about three-thirty to pick up Nic, Jaxon and Indi for a cruise up the river with wine, bickys and dip.

Baby-sitting duties after being away for most of the day. Not an unenjoyable task at all.
